LYSE LEMIEUX
On Balance
All things considered it’s only lately that I understood how small and asymmetrical my world had become during those pandemic years - - Like an invisible thread had unevenly stitched time into a small cocoon and prevented me from reaching out or moving forward.
Sisyphus - - Pushing the boulder uphill only to watch it roll down again.
In many ways our lives have opened up but our world continues to desperately be in need of mending.
Some of the works in the gallery were originally made as ink drawings on paper. Revisiting them I wanted to remember but this time with paint and, on a surface where all edges must be considered, the comfort and satisfaction of stringing a line onto a simple and unobstructed ground.

Lyse Lemieux
Lyse Lemieux’s interdisciplinary practice has focused strongly on drawing, and includes sculpture, painting, and installation. Lemieux’s practice reflects a honed approach and the lived experience of painting’s evolving insignificance and resurgence.
Most recently her work includes numerous public art projects, reflecting an implicit tension between the support and dominance that built spaces offer. Through considerations of process and materiality her work explores the space between abstraction and representation, while consistently maintaining an interest in the human figure.
Originally from Ottawa Lyse Lemieux attended the University of Ottawa and graduated with a BFA from the University of British-Columbia. She has exhibited nationally and internationally including the Canadian Cultural Centre; Rome, the Vancouver Art Gallery; Vancouver, Oakville Galleries; Toronto, Richmond Art Gallery; Richmond, BC, The Charles H.
