HANNAH JOHNSON

Is an emerging ceramic artist from Hamilton, currently based in Kent, Ohio where she is completing her MFA at Kent State University.

Johnson’s work is not contained to one style or size, but created into a multiplicity of forms that balance a bright and playful exterior with a technically complex construction.

Physically, her sculptural practice is an exploration in surface, colour and material, whilst spiritually Johnson seeks to negotiate her “complicated and often contradictory feelings [towards] my relationship with femininity”.

As the artist writes:

“I embrace and reinforce the traditionally feminine, challenging myself to own the stereotypes of frivolity, softness, and domesticity through the use of pastel colours and materials such as glitter and fringe. Form inspiration is taken from domestic objects ranging from desserts, to home appliances and furnishings, while the use of textiles and rugs offer both a soft and comfortable resting point for the work physically, whilst simultaneously placing the work in a domestic context. Humour and a sense of playfulness in the work challenges these stereotypes, presenting an irreverent take on femininity in a contemporary setting.”
